How to get to the Kruger National Park from Johannesburg?
(this is typically the departure point to Kruger when you are in South Africa)
Guests have a variety of options in travelling from Johannesburg to the Kruger National Park. We can offer any one of these based on your preference and include in your Safari package.
Here are some of the options available:
- Travel with a rental vehicle (Avis). There is an Avis office at Skukuza Camp so you can collect and drop off conveniently.
- Shared Shuttle service which departs at a scheduled time and location. This is most cost effective but means sharing the ride in a comfortable and professional small bus transfer.
- Private transfer. This is more costly but offers the flexibility of pick-ups direct from you hotel and means you don’t have to worry about the route and driving.
- Direct flight from Johannesburg to KMIA Nelspruit where we will collect you or alternatively directly to Kruger National Parks Skukuza Airport where we will collect you.
Itinerary
DAY 1:
Dependant on how we have booked your mode of travel or transfer to the Kruger National Park we will always aim to have you on the Open Safari Vehicle and entering the Park just before lunch. As soon as we enter Kruger we are on Safari and will already be on the look out for game that is feeding over the midday. We are likely to encounter many of the general game species on our journey to our overnight camp. These include good sightings of Elephant, Zebra, Giraffe and many of the antelope species. Our destination for the next two nights is Satara Camp in the central region of the Park. The area is regarded as the best Lion country in Kruger and will take us the better part of the afternoon to get there. We will stop for a comfort break at an old outpost known as Tshokwane where we can have a leg stretch and grab a cuppa coffee. The route to Satara is beautiful and happens to be one of our favourites. What becomes apparent is the transition in Eco-zones and the change is scenery and landscape.
We will aim to arrive just before the camp gate close and check into our bungalows before dark. Dinner will be at the camp restaurant from 19h00 and we will discuss the days sightings as wells as the next days route and expectations.
DAY 2:
Its an early morning wake up call with a cup of coffee in camp to take in all the wonderful sounds of the dawn chorus. Satara camp has a few special vistors in that of an old female Honey-badger weve named “hop-along” as well as an African Wild cat and neither of them mind a few pictures. As soon as the camp gates open we will be on our way and off to our breakfast stop. There is a beautiful gravel road that tracks along the eastern boundary for over 50km and which traverese some beautiful grassland country as it makes its way up to the Olifants river and our breakfast stop. The road is wonderful for many of the large grazing species, Lion, Cheetah and a variety of grassland bird species. These include Ostritch, Kori Bustard, Southern Ground Hornbill and many shy game birds. At the end of the road we will cross the Olifants river and the savanna changes completely to a more rugged bush experience.
Our breakfast stop will be on the deck at Olifants Camp over looking the mighty Olifants river which meanders eastward towards Mozambique and the indian ocean. After breakfast we will have a leg stretch around the camp taking in the views and atmosphere before making our way back to Satara.
Our journey back to Satara takes us along the main road which provides wonderful game viewing along side many prominent water sources that attract a variety of games species from Elephants to Hyenas, large herds of Wildebeest and Zebra as well as vultures and storks.
The central grasslands that surround Satara Camp is home to roughly 25% of the Kruger National Parks Lion population and also supports wonderful Cheetah, Spotted Hyena and Black-backed Jackel.
On arrival back to camp we will have some personal relaxtion time around camp, perhaps a nap, maybe some pool time or shopping the camp shop.
We will again head out late afternoon and head west towards a series of dams and pans and a great view of the sunset. We will return to Camp at final sun-set around 18h00pm Dinner will be at the camp restaurant from 19h00 and we will discuss the days sightings as wells as the next days route and expectations.
DAY 3:
Its another early morning wake up call with a cup of coffee in camp to take in all the wonderful sounds of the dawn chorus. As soon as we can chase the sunrose and exit the gates we will be off and following one of the most famous gravel roads in the Kruger. Making our way to Nwanesti lookout, its great opportunity to look for predators before stopping for another coffee and spending some time at the lookout birding and discussing the history of the area.
We then continue down the eastern border via an area known as Lindanda which has a famous story of the first game ranger Harry Wolhuter and how we killed a lion that attached him with a knife and then used his belt to start himself high in a tree. Our breakfast stop will be at Tshokwane outpost before heading back onto Skukuza and then your departure point.
*Note – We will assist you with planning and booking your transport and transfers but any flights will need to be done by yourself.
What to Bring
Having taken hundreds of Safaris into the Kruger National Park we know from experience what’s important to pack. Here are a few items we recommend that you don’t leave home without:
- Mobile phone with charging cable
- Camera
- Binoculars (We will have complimentary pair on the vehicle)
- A good hat for summer months or warm beanie in winter
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Comfortable shoes
What to wear
Summer Months: September to April
We recommend light functional attire preferably in natural colour shades to blend in with our environment and not stand out visually to game species. Summer can be hot and the direct sunlight dangerous so please remember a good hat as well as sunscreen. During the hottest summer months (Nov/Dec) the daytime temperatures can reach 35 degrees Celsius from 10h30 and from 13h00 the temperature can reach upward of 40 degrees. The summer months are also our rainy season so the afternoons can experience thunder showers but all vehicles are equipped with waterproof ponchos as well as canvas flaps that can enclose the vehicle.
Winter Months: May to August
During the winter months in the Kruger National Park, we will usually experience blue skies on most days but with a daily average temperature of 18 to 26 degrees Celsius. The early mornings on Safaris can be cooler with temperatures from 5 to 8 degrees and late afternoons again dropping below 18 degrees. Winter Safaris are fantastic because the visibility is very good but we do recommend that you have warm clothing as the wind on the back of an Open Safari Vehicle can make things chilly. On our Safari vehicles we do provide fleece blankets.
