Being a family owned Safari business we understand what it means to go on Safari with our own small kids because we do it all the time. Having young kids on the vehicle makes it a challenge for other clients and puts unnecessary pressure on the parents so we go full private for our family with kids safaris in Kruger National Park.
Another challenge is of course how long can the kids sit still before kicking off and getting grumpy and frustrated. We get this all the time and know how long we can be out in the bush for (based on the kid of course) before needing to take a good extended break and leg stretch. We manage our family with kids safaris based on the parents and the type of flexibility they need so that they can also enjoy their experience.
Andrew has become a master of keeping the kiddies entertained and has endless games and stories to engage them and educate them whilst on safari. Our Kruger National Park kids safari offers parents great flexibility around their kids sleep times, concentration and engagement, interests and making sure they also get a good chance to play and burn of some energy at Skukuza camps play area. Please note that as per SANParks rules we can only accommodate children of 3 years and older on a Open Safari Vehicle in Kruger National Park.
The most important part about the Family Safari in Kruger National Park is the flexibility parents have to create a plan that works for then.
Typically our Kruger Park Morning Safari departs early. In the summer months we will start at the nearest gate from 05h30 and in the winter months from 05h45 as Kruger adjusts its gate times to account for the seasonal changes in sunrise. As a Private Kruger Safari experience, these departure times are all dependant on what works for mom and dad.
Prior to departure your guide Andrew will have already engaged with you via email or phone call and he would have already established your travel plan for the morning and the ideal pick-up time. For safety reasons we don’t pick up families with small kids on the Open Safari vehicle unless you are staying at one of the camps in the Park or one of the very destinations at the entrance gates to the Park.
Guests will meet Andrew at the confirmed gate of entry and all their SANParks entrance administration will be handled on their behalf to ensure a fast and efficient entrance to the Park. (Please check our SANParks fees and rules and regulations page). We will spend roughly 2 hours on safari in search of as many animals as possible, making it as fun and entertaining for the kids as well as mom and dad. We will be making our way through to Skukuza Camp and the Shalati restaurant for our brunch breakfast stop. The Shalati restaurant offers a great kiddies menu as well as fun play area for the kids to burn of as much energy as needed. As soon as mom and dad are happy we will depart and make our way back out in the bush. We are able to design a day itinerary for both Half and Full Day Kruger Safaris with Kids but typically recommend the half day as its easiest for the small humans and leave some afternoon available for a walk or swim at your accommodation before dinner.
If you have preference to what you wish to eat you are also welcome to bring along your own food and snacks. We will still stop at the same place as they do offer outside seating around the play area.
Our gate return time is all dependant on what time you want to start on the morning. If it suites you to start at 08h00 then we will be back just after lunch around 14h00 but typically if we start by 06h00 we will aim to be back around 12h30.
Having taken hundreds of Safaris into the Kruger National Park we know from experience what’s important to pack. Here are a few items we recommend that you don’t leave home without:
- Mobile phone with charging cable
- Camera
- Binoculars (We will have complimentary pair on the vehicle)
- A good hat for summer months or warm beanie in winter
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Comfortable shoes
- Back Pack (individually or one for the group is also fine)
Summer Months: September to April
We recommend light functional attire preferably in natural colour shades to blend in with our environment and not stand out visually to game species. Summer can be hot and the direct sunlight dangerous so please remember a good hat as well as sunscreen. During the hottest summer months (Nov/Dec) the daytime temperatures can reach 35 degrees Celsius from 10h30 and from 13h00 the temperature can reach upward of 40 degrees. The summer months are also our rainy season so the afternoons can experience thundershowers but all vehicles are equipped with waterproof ponchos as well as canvas flaps that can enclose the vehicle.
Winter Months: May to August
During the winter months in the Kruger National Park, we will usually experience blue skies on most days but with a daily average temperature of 18 to 26 degrees Celsius. The early mornings on Safaris can be cooler with temperatures from 5 to 8 degrees and late afternoons again dropping below 18 degrees. Winter Safaris are fantastic because the visibility is very good but we do recommend that you have warm clothing as the wind on the back of an Open Safari Vehicle can make things chilly. On our Safari vehicles we do provide fleece blankets.
