How to get to the Kruger National Park from Johannesburg?
(this is typically the departure point to Kruger when you are in South Africa)
Guests have a variety of options in travelling from Johannesburg to the Kruger National Park. We can offer any one of these based on your preference and include in your Safari package.
Here are some of the options available:
- Travel with a rental vehicle (Avis). There is an Avis office at Skukuza Camp so you can collect and drop off conveniently.
- Shared Shuttle service which departs at a scheduled time and location. This is most cost effective but means sharing the ride in a comfortable and professional small bus transfer.
- Private transfer. This is more costly but offers the flexibility of pick-ups direct from you hotel and means you don’t have to worry about the route and driving.
- Direct flight from Johannesburg to KMIA Nelspruit where we will collect you or alternatively directly to Kruger National Parks Skukuza Airport where we will collect you.
Itinerary
DAY 1:
Departure time on the day is dependant on how we have booked your mode of travel or transfer to the Kruger National Park but we will plan your itinerary to ensure that you are on the Open Safari Vehicle and entering the Park just before 12h00 midday. As soon as you meet with your guide Andrew, you will move across onto our Open Safari vehicle and then we are off. We will be heading north to Satara Camp for our first night and this stretch will take us the better part of the afternoon. On route we will already encounter many species including Zebra, Giraffe, Blue Wildebeest, Impala and Elephant as well as a variety birds from small waxbills to eagles and vultures.
We will aim to arrive just before the camp gates close and check into our bungalows around sunset. Dinner will be at the camp restaurant from 19h00 and we will discuss the days sightings as wells as the next days route and expectations.
DAY 2:
Day 2 is an early morning wake up call with a sunrise coffee whilst we wait for the gates to open. As soon as the gates open we are off and heading north again towards Shingwedzi Camp which is our accommodation for the next two nights. This is a full day of Safari through Kruger but with regault comfort breaks and stops along the way. We want to push as far north as possibel so we can enjoy the quite solitude of the Far Northern kruger. We will stop at Olifants Camp fpr breakfast with its beautiful views overlooking the Olifants river from high up on the rocky ridges of the camp. Our lunch stop will be at Mopani Camp which also offers great views of pioneer dam which is full of hippos, crocodiles and visited by herds of Elephants.
After lunch we continue ontoward Shingwedzi camp detouruing past the beautiful and well know Red Rocks. This part of Kruger has mystical feeling to it its wilderness is filled with large Elepohant tuskers, rare Sharpes Grysbok and offers glimpses of Eland, Sable and possibly Roan antelope. We will arrive at Shingwedzi Camp late afternoon and check in to our bungalows just before sunset.
Dinner will be at the camp restaurant from 19h00 and we will discuss the days sightings as wells as the next days route and expectations.
DAY 3:
On Day 3 we will rise early and grab a coffee or tea before heading out with park rangers for a 3 hour morning bush walk (optional) in the surrounding area. Being on foot is an incredibel experience and offers guests a completely different experience in the Kruger. It’s a sensory explosion and guests will learn about all the msaller aspects of the savanna from grasess to tress, plants and animal tracks. Of course there is also an opportunity to encounter game on foot and this along is just amazing and rewilds ones spirit.
On arrival back at camp we will enjoy a breakfast and a break. If guest wish we will head to Punda Maria Camp for lunch or alternatively spend the midday relaxing in camp or pool side. Laate afternoon we will head out again for an early afternoon drive along the Mphongolo river. This our favorite road in the entire Kruger and the shear beauty of the bush is enough to mesemrise the first time traveller ( weve done it so many times we cant count and every time its wonderful). This is a slow meander enjoy the beautufl trees that line the river bank and the we will search for Leopard in particular.
We will return back to camp at gate closure. Dinner will be at the camp restaurant from 19h00 and we will discuss the days sightings as wells as the next days route and expectations.
DAY 4:
On Day 4 we again start early and begin the journey back south down to Letaba Camp where we will be spending our fourth night on Safari. We will be following the eastern gravel road which is possible the quietest road in Kruger and enjoying to look out points along the way. Our breakfast stop will be at Mopani Camp but not before hopefully finding the rare Tsessebe and possibly some Cheetah along the Nshawu pans just east of the camp.
After breakfast we will continue onto Letaba Camp arriving just after lunch. We can take some time out and enjoy lunch and check into our bungalows. Tonight we will be doing a night drive so we will do a short afternoon drive (optional) and a early dinner before our evening night drive from 20h00 until 22h00.
DAY 5:
Day 5 we again rise early and head out as soon as the gates open for Skukuza Camp. This is a full day safari and we will stop along our route at Olifant’s Camp for breakfast and then onto Satara and Tshokwane for a lunch stop. The main road south offers some wonderful game viewing and you are likely to see the big 5 and many of the antelopes such as Kudu, Nyala, Waterbuck, Steenbok, Zebra and Giraffe.
After our lunch stop at Tshokwane we will continue to Skukuza Camp and check in to our bungalows for the evening. After check in and some time to relax we will head for some more wildlife game viewing and sundowners on a rock that overlooks the surrounding savanna.
We will finally head back to Skukuza camp at sunset and gate closure and make our way to dinner at the Shalati Train restaurant for a final evening safari celebration.
DAY 6:
Our final early morning wake up call for our last sunrise coffee before we head out. This morning we will make our way into the southern region in serach of Rhino and Wilddogs before enjoying breakfast at Lower Sabie Camp. Based on your departure today we will deteremine th ebest route to ensur ethat you arrive in time for your transfer back to Johannbesurg or your next destination.
The above is an example itnerary and is flexible around our client travel requirements.
*Note – We will assist you with planning and booking your transport and transfers but any flights will need to be done by yourself.
What to Bring
Having taken hundreds of Safaris into the Kruger National Park we know from experience what’s important to pack. Here are a few items we recommend that you don’t leave home without:
- Mobile phone with charging cable
- Camera
- Binoculars (We will have complimentary pair on the vehicle)
- A good hat for summer months or warm beanie in winter
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Comfortable shoes
What to wear
Summer Months: September to April
We recommend light functional attire preferably in natural colour shades to blend in with our environment and not stand out visually to game species. Summer can be hot and the direct sunlight dangerous so please remember a good hat as well as sunscreen. During the hottest summer months (Nov/Dec) the daytime temperatures can reach 35 degrees Celsius from 10h30 and from 13h00 the temperature can reach upward of 40 degrees. The summer months are also our rainy season so the afternoons can experience thunder showers but all vehicles are equipped with waterproof ponchos as well as canvas flaps that can enclose the vehicle.
Winter Months: May to August
During the winter months in the Kruger National Park, we will usually experience blue skies on most days but with a daily average temperature of 18 to 26 degrees Celsius. The early mornings on Safaris can be cooler with temperatures from 5 to 8 degrees and late afternoons again dropping below 18 degrees. Winter Safaris are fantastic because the visibility is very good but we do recommend that you have warm clothing as the wind on the back of an Open Safari Vehicle can make things chilly. On our Safari vehicles we do provide fleece blankets.
