It all starts with the discovery of Gold between Graskop and Pilgrims rest in the mid 1800s. The soils in the region had seemingly been blessed with a generous gold deposit as a result of the escarpment breaking away and dropping towards the east some 200 million years back. With the discovery of gold by a gentlemen named “Wheelbarrow” Patterson, this attracted fortune seekers and adventuers from far and wide looking for their own lot of a fabled eldorado in the savanna lowlands of the eastern transvaal. Their stories are wonder-filled adventures in a time that was wild and remote and which evolved around gold panning in small shanty towns laden with drink and the possibility of making your fortune.
Hidden in the deep rill sthat run of the sides of escarpment, the setting couldn’t have been more picturesque with magnificent mountain vistas, crystal clear streams and waterfalls and forrests that opened up with glorious views like Gods own window that looked out east towards the Kruger Natioal Park. Join us for an incredible journey along the Old Pilgrims Trail visiting the Graskop Gorge, Gods Window, the 3 Rondawels and of course Bourkes Luck Potholes on a route know today as the the Panormama route. Our version of the Panorama offers our guests a crafeully crafted storyboard that intriduces the history of the panorama and escrapement and blends it together with the early orgions of the lowveld savanna and in patrticulart the greater Kruger National Park. It’s an experience ethat shoudlnt be missed and offers clients and travellers a complete view and understanding of this beautiful region of South Africa.
We collect our guests from their accommodation from 07h30 so they can enjoy breakfast before departing. Depending on the size of the group we will either use our own Safaria Land Rover Discovery or will take a bus, which can seat up to 14 guests. Our first destination is the sleepy hollow of Graskop where we will either stop along the route on the road side for a coffee to enjoy the views are grab one in town before taking the road out to 3 Rondawels and the Blyde River Canyon. With so much to see in a single day we have created a route that focuses on what we believe to be the best views and vistas as well as waterfalls and walks. Our Panorama safari is dedicated to the wonderful old history of the early mining towns of Sabi, Graskop, Pilgrims Rest and of course the people characters that are central to the story we tell. It’s also a historical tour that delves deep into the history of the Trichardt and Pretorius clans and their great trek down from Blyde Canyon into the lowveld, across the Kruger National Park and into Mozambique. It’s the backdrop to a wild and wondrous story of the people of old, the world they lived in, the nature the lived with and the beautiful surroundings that got to do it in.
Having lead hundreds of Safaris into the Kruger National Park and up to the Panorama, we know from experience what’s important to pack. Here are a few items we recommend that you don’t leave home without:
We recommend light functional attire preferably in natural colour shades to blend in with our environment and not stand out visually to game species. Summer can be hot and the direct sunlight dangerous so please remember a good hat as well as sunscreen. During the hottest summer months (Nov/Dec) the daytime temperatures can reach 35 degrees Celsius from 10h30 and from 13h00 the temperature can reach upward of 40 degrees. The summer months are also our rainy season so the afternoons can experience thunder showers but all vehicles are equipped with waterproof ponchos as well as canvas flaps that can enclose the vehicle.
During the winter months in the Kruger National Park, we will usually experience blue skies on most days but with a daily average temperature of 18 to 26 degrees Celsius. The early mornings on Safaris can be cooler with temperatures from 5 to 8 degrees and late afternoons again dropping below 18 degrees. Winter Safaris are fantastic because the visibility is very good but we do recommend that you have warm clothing as the wind on the back of an Open Safari Vehicle can make things chilly. On our Safari vehicles we do provide fleece blankets.
