How to get to the Kruger National Park from Johannesburg?
(this is typically the departure point to Kruger when you are in South Africa)
Guests have a variety of options in travelling from Johannesburg to the Kruger National Park. We can offer any one of these based on your preference and include in your Safari package.
Here are some of the options available:
- Travel with a rental vehicle (Avis). There is an Avis office at Skukuza Camp so you can collect and drop off conveniently.
- Shared Shuttle service which departs at a scheduled time and location. This is most cost effective but means sharing the ride in a comfortable and professional small bus transfer.
- Private transfer. This is more costly but offers the flexibility of pick-ups direct from you hotel and means you don’t have to worry about the route and driving.
- Direct flight from Johannesburg to KMIA Nelspruit where we will collect you or alternatively directly to Kruger National Parks Skukuza Airport where we will collect you.
Itinerary
DAY 1:
Departure time on the day is dependant on how we have booked your mode of travel or transfer to the Kruger National Park but we will plan your itinerary to ensure that you are on the Open Safari Vehicle and entering the Park just before 12h00 midday. As soon as you meet with your guide Andrew, you will move across onto our Open Safari vehicle and then we are off. We will be heading north to Satara Camp for our first night and this stretch will take us the better part of the afternoon. On route we will already encounter many species including Zebra, Giraffe, Blue Wildebeest, Impala and Elephant as well as a variety birds from small waxbills to eagles and vultures.
We will aim to arrive just before the camp gates close and check into our bungalows around sunset. Dinner will be at the camp restaurant from 19h00 and we will discuss the days sightings as wells as the next days route and expectations.
DAY 2:
Day 2 is an early morning wake up call with a sunrise coffee whilst we wait for the gates to open. As soon as the gates open we are off and heading north again towards Letaba Camp which is our accommodation for the night. On route we will make our way through some of the bmost beautiful grasslands on a old gravel road that really captures the sense of african and old african safari. The terrain changes incredibly just before our breakfast stop ofrom grassland to rugged bush as we reach Olifants Camp which is high up on a rocky cliff. Breakfast is served on a deck that over looks the might olifants river with glorious views and the chance to spot hippo, crocodile and other thirsty animals coming down to drink. After breakfast and a good leg stretch we then make our way to Letaba Camp following the Letaba river which confluences with the Olifants river just a shoprt distance north. This gravel road hugs the the river on the right and thick mopane shrub on the left. It’s a wonder place for large bull elephants and lions trying to find some shade.
On arrival at Letaba its time to realx and enjoy some down time. Letaba Camp is well known as the camp you never have to leave. With stunning views of the river from the retsruant, to the dense shady canopy and lanscaping that makes up the camp, its one of our personal favorites and is indeed filled with that special Kruger atmosphere. At letaba Camp you also have the Elephant museum which pays tribute to the Magnificent Seven tuskers of Kruger and their incredible mammoth like tusks are on display to see. After lunch we will check into our Bungalows from 14h00.
The afternoon drive leaves Camp around 15h45pm and will head out to the western side of Letaba camp towards an ancient ruin site called Masorini, these ancient ruins date back to 200 AD . Along this route we will follow the Nhlanganini creek and a few scattered pans in search of Wilddogs, Spotted Hyena and great sunset views.
We will again return to Camp at camp closure and then either return to their Bungalows or we go straight onto having drinks and dinner at Letaba’s Camp restaurant. After dinner it’s a night walk and personal time to relax.
DAY 3:
It’s an early morning wake up call and with Coffee and rusks as we take in the sunrise and early mornings sounds from camp. As soon as the gates open we are off and heading north to our next camp for the night – Shingwedzi Camp.
This is a day full of awe and wonder. The change in Kruger is exceptional and there’s a tangible sense that you are travelling back in time. This is where Kruger gets a lot quieter and things seem to take on a sense of grandeur. Making our way north we will stop at Mopani camp for breakfast and enjoy the views over pioneer dam. After breakfast we push on towards Shingwedzi Camp and on route travel past the famous red rocks route before reaching camp late afternoon. Shingwedzi Camp is nestled against the Shingwedzi River and is positioned in a beautiful savanna with large trees and low shrub making it completely different to anything you’ve already seen.
We will then take time to relax and stretch our legs around camp, perhaps a swim in the pool as some R&R. The afternoon drive will be shorter, heading out at 16h30 following the river east along a gravel track and taking in the beauty of the river frontage and the sense of solitude it offers.
We will again return to Camp at gate closure and then either return to our Bungalows or go straight onto the restruiant and have a drink and then dinner at Shingwedzi’s Camp restaurant. After dinner it’s a night walk and personal time to relax.
DAY 4:
On Day 4 we again start early and begin the journey back south. One of the most incredible aspects of Kruger is the diversity and the constant change in landscape. Safar itself means to journey and our 4, 5 and 6 Day Safaris through Kruger have been designed to share this experience with you whilst exploring some of the most incredible savanna on the continent. As we head south back towards Satara Camp for our 4th night, you will really get a sense of how Kruger changes. The route back to south to Satara will change so that you get to experience different scenery and you can expect to see loads of the large herbivores and likely some cats as well.
We will stop at Mopani Camp for breakfast and a comfort break before heading on towards Olifant’s for a lunch stop. The road from Olifant’s to Satara as several water holes along the route and very productive game viewing around an area known as Ngotso. We plan to arrive at Satara late afternoon and then take the afternoon off to enjoy the camp and some R&R.
Dinner will at Satara Camp restaurant from 19h00.
DAY 5:
Our final early morning wake up call for our last sunrise coffee before we head out. This morning we will make our way on a famous loop that is regarded as some of the best Lion country in Kruger. This route takes us via a beautiful coffe stop at Nwanest look out and then on towards Tshokwane for a leg stretch and finally Skukuza Camp for lunch. Our travel itinerary on this day will determine our route back so that we can ensure that you are in time for you transfer back to Johannesburg or your next destination.
The above is an example itnerary and is flexible around our client travel requirements.
*Note – We will assist you with planning and booking your transport and transfers but any flights will need to be done by yourself.
What to Bring
Having taken hundreds of Safaris into the Kruger National Park we know from experience what’s important to pack. Here are a few items we recommend that you don’t leave home without:
- Mobile phone with charging cable
- Camera
- Binoculars (We will have complimentary pair on the vehicle)
- A good hat for summer months or warm beanie in winter
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Comfortable shoes
What to wear
Summer Months: September to April
We recommend light functional attire preferably in natural colour shades to blend in with our environment and not stand out visually to game species. Summer can be hot and the direct sunlight dangerous so please remember a good hat as well as sunscreen. During the hottest summer months (Nov/Dec) the daytime temperatures can reach 35 degrees Celsius from 10h30 and from 13h00 the temperature can reach upward of 40 degrees. The summer months are also our rainy season so the afternoons can experience thunder showers but all vehicles are equipped with waterproof ponchos as well as canvas flaps that can enclose the vehicle.
Winter Months: May to August
During the winter months in the Kruger National Park, we will usually experience blue skies on most days but with a daily average temperature of 18 to 26 degrees Celsius. The early mornings on Safaris can be cooler with temperatures from 5 to 8 degrees and late afternoons again dropping below 18 degrees. Winter Safaris are fantastic because the visibility is very good but we do recommend that you have warm clothing as the wind on the back of an Open Safari Vehicle can make things chilly. On our Safari vehicles we do provide fleece blankets.
